Speaking Truth Through Public Speaking

Speech isn’t just about standing in front of an audience — it’s about connecting with an audience, sharing something that matters, and developing the confidence to speak with purpose. Whether you're drawn to current events, passionate about persuasive storytelling, or love teaching people new things, there's a speech event that’s right for you.

This page will walk you through the core public speaking events offered at Jay Speech & Debate and help you figure out where your voice belongs. You’ll also find tips, structure guides, and helpful resources to grow in your event.

“Be the change you wish to see in the world.”
— Mahatma Gandhi—

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH EVENT TO CHOOSE?

Choosing the right event is about matching your personality, your passions, and your strengths to the right format. Ask yourself:

  • Do I want to persuade people with my opinions?
    → Try Original Oratory

  • Do I love teaching others interesting facts or concepts?
    → Try Informative Speaking

  • Am I a news junkie or love current events?
→ Try Extemporaneous Speaking (US or International)

  • Do I want to simulate a live news broadcast?
    → Try Radio Speaking

Don’t be afraid to try more than one! Many students explore multiple events before they find their niche — and every event builds valuable skills.
